DJs for Obama: Seriously?
It’s finally happened. Political strategists realized that a decent portion of American youth is now paying attention to Electronic Music, which to them is nothing more than another media outlet to exploit. The worst part is that they are getting help from within the community from our so-called leaders, the DJs.
The essence of Electronic Music has always been associated with escapism. Isn’t that somewhere near the polar opposite of anything having to do with political discourse? I thought we go see these DJs and listen to our music to forget about this kind of BS, not rally for it. Granted that’s not the most productive mind-frame but I feel like I’m force-fed enough electoral propaganda before it leaked inside the community I use to shelter myself from that sort of thing. Whats next… Bros for Romney? Is Steve Aoki going to do a political track with a chant about global warming? It just seems absurd. Kind of like how I know that posting this article is counterproductive to the point I am trying to make.
Maybe I should be happy that people like Aoki and DJ Cassidy are using their influence to motivate fans about politics. I guess its better than being known for having an outrageous rider or throwing cake on your fans. But that’s just it, DJ’s aren’t exactly known for always being the best role models so why should anyone listen to their political views? Using your voice for the greater good is the grown-up thing to do, but don’t we use EDM to feel young and escape our adult responsibilities? As hypocritical as this statement is, but lets just keep politics out of the EDM scene, please.
