London Olympics: Tensions Rising Between China and US
This Olympics may cause an international incident as Britain and US media is accusing 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen of doping after her world record swim in the 400m individual medley. They are questioning the last 50m, where she swam a faster split that American swimmer Ryan Lochte. They also bring up China’s past of doping as proof that this is suspicious. China has responded to the allegations saying that this is petty, and it shows the conceit of the Western World. The Chinese mention that no one questioned Michael Phelps when he broke the world record at 15 in 2001, or in 2008 when he won 8 gold medals. It should be noted that Ye has passed all of her drug tests and the IOC backs her as clean, but that isn’t enough for some. It does seem somewhat hypocritical as the US has a 17-year-old that set the world record in these Olympics, and if anyone questioned her it would be like an act of war.
